The Evening Edit
Dressing for the evening, when you're away from home
There’s a version of me that packs for evening at home with total confidence and then stands in a hotel room at 7pm, three days into a holiday, unable to get dressed. What works when you’re stepping into a car outside your own front door doesn’t always work when you’re walking out barefoot-brown from a day at the beach. I’ve stopped trying to pack one answer. I pack four.
The Black Slip
Bias-cut, lace at the edges, This is the one I reach for on the night that matters most. Dinner somewhere with tablecloths, a walk afterwards that goes on longer than planned. This bag from The Veil has more colour in it than the dress allows itself. This dress has been doing this exact job, the kind you’d have found on a woman leaving a party in 1996, and it hasn’t dated because it was never trying to be of a moment in the first place.
The Blush Slip
Sheer where the black dress is opaque, romantic where it’s severe. This is the dress for the earlier evening, drinks before dinner, a terrace, something with a view still in it. Tortoiseshell sunglasses pushed up rather than worn. Nothing about this look asks to be taken seriously, which is exactly why it works on holiday.
The Ivory Column
The most architectural of the four and the one I pack when I want to look like I’ve made an effort without anyone being able to say what the effort was. Cut close, floor-length, no print or embellishment doing the talking. This is where the jewellery gets to have an opinion: coloured stone earrings, a heavy gold cuff. This dress borrows glamour from how you stand in it, not from what’s printed on it.
The Two Piece
Not a dress at all, and some nights that’s the better decision. This is the look for the night you don’t want to commit to a dress for dinners that might turn into dancing, a group that might change plans twice before ten. Comfortable enough to forget about, considered enough that nobody clocks it as loungewear with sunglasses on.
