9 things you need in your suitcase this summer
Inspired by Joan Didion's iconic packing list, we have distilled down what you really need and why….
When packing, it’s so easy to go overboard, but there are certain pieces that you always need to include and here’s why
9 - I’ve always believed in having a solid staple pair of denim shorts in my suitcase. They’re incredibly versatile; you can throw just about anything on top, from a classic white tee to a flowy blouse or a structured blazer. That kind of flexibility is what makes them so brilliant, especially during the summer months. Whether you're heading to the beach, running errands, or going out for a casual brunch, denim shorts strike that perfect balance between comfort and effortless style. They’re the ultimate warm-weather essential that you can dress up or down with ease.
8 - Sleek sunglasses are always needed. You will be wearing them most days, from sunny beaches to early morning breakfasts. If you are like me, I am always losing your sunglasses and now have a hand-woven sunglasses holder so you don’t end up losing them. We worked with an artisan who hand-wove a few for us. They were only available in our shop, but are now available online too.
7 - Accessories are essential when travelling. You're typically working with a more limited wardrobe than usual, but the right accessories can completely transform your outfits. Whether it’s a bold pair of earrings, a silk scarf, or a statement belt, they give you the flexibility to elevate or tone down a look with ease. That’s especially helpful when you’re going straight from the beach to dinner or transitioning from daywear to evening plans. A few key pieces can make your travel wardrobe feel endlessly versatile.
6 - The PJ-bottom-style trouser is quietly having its moment. Relaxed, fluid, and perfect for the summer. I love the Fisherman pants from MATTEAU; they are so easy and chic for the summer. I have also been finding myself returning to a pair of silky ones from The Row. We are making some soon with Tekla, which I’m so excited for.
5 - When it comes to the perfect do-it-all bag, I keep circling a few quiet: the Phoebe Philo gig bag, The Row’s leather tote, a white-on-white LL Bean Boat & Tote, which is surprisingly chic, endlessly practical, the Ines basket and as always, a handwoven leather of Dragon Diffusion.
4 - You always want to have a white shirt on hand - airy, effortless, and just the right cut. It’s perfect for layering on summer days. I throw it over a tank or a swimsuit when the sun gets too strong, or wear it open with a good pair of shorts. Something long enough to cover your arms if you’re avoiding sunburn, but crisp enough to still feel put-together. It’s the summer layer that is handy for everything.
3 - A staple swimsuit is the one you pack first and wear the most. Ours is designed with a clean silhouette that works just as well in the sea as it does under a shirt at lunch. No bold hardware or tricky cut-outs, just an excellent shape, thoughtfully made, that makes you feel like yourself. And of course, Hunza G works so well every time for just this.
2 - A good pair of sandals. Something you can slip on for walking around all day, then keep on when you head straight into dinner. I keep returning to the Ayla Chocolate Suede Flats and the Helix thong sandal by Christen.
1 - And finally, the little vest or tank top, the unsung hero of summer dressing. Easy, reliable, and endlessly versatile. I always wear our Brook tank, in both black and white, and it never fails me.
